The L.C. Dorsey Research Honor Society is a multidisciplinary network of social, behavioral, health, and citizen scientists who have produced or contributed to the production of exceptional minority health and health disparities research. Dr. L.C. Dorsey was a fierce advocate and pioneer who worked tirelessly to improve the health and well-being of Mississippi’s disadvantaged and disenfranchised populations.
Purpose
This honor society is comprised of faculty, graduate students, and citizen scientists who produce meritorious research that contributes to the effort to improve health among vulnerable populations. An invitation to join this society of scholars only comes through a nomination and rigorous selection process that evaluates scientific productivity and commitment to the ideals demonstrated by the society’s namesake. Membership in this society requires one to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Dorsey through the pursuit of research excellence, a focus on marginalized populations, and a willingness to invest in the next generation of scientists.

Membership benefits
- Priority access to a network of scientists active in population health, minority health, health disparities, and health equity research;
- Information about additional training opportunities such as internships or fellowships;
- Ongoing career mentoring and professional development;
- Member certification. Members receive a welcome certificate and framed gold sash; and
- Members will be invited to participate in a formal induction ceremony.
Eligibility requirements
University faculty- Track record of scientific scholarship in population health, minority health, health disparities, and/or health equity research
- Demonstration of community-partnered science
- Contributing to the next generation of scholarship
Master's degree students- Completed a minimum of 12 semester hours of graduate-level coursework in an accredited program
- Cumulative graduate GPA of 3.50
- Demonstrated commitment to a career in research
Doctoral degree students- Completed a minimum of 12 semester hours of doctoral-level coursework in an accredited program
- Cumulative graduate GPA of 3.50
- Demonstrated excellence in research
Citizen scientists- Demonstrated progress from working on a community health related project for at least 12 months
- Independent and/or academic-partnered research/science
- Demonstrated commitment to improving population health and/or health equity
Membership nominations
Individuals may self-nominate or submit a nomination. Request a nomination packet.
All nominees must demonstrate results of scientific commitments to improving community health and must show results of scientific inquiry in improving the health of marginalized populations.
A complete nomination packet includes the following:
- a Curriculum vitae (CV) or résumé,
- a professional recommendation letter (letters from peers, family members, etc., will not be accepted), and
- a brief statement describing their research-related activities and commitment to improving marginalized populations' health.
Nomination Process
A diverse panel of reviewers will evaluate all nominations. The L.C. Dorsey Research Honor Society complies with applicable federal civil rights laws.
Nominations are currently not being accepted. The Spring 2025 ceremony date will be announced.
